A short interview with Ana Orešnik, the solo singer
Ana, as a student
of the 3rd Gimnazija class, you are fully occupied with school duties, but you
still manage to study solo singing very seriously. Would you, please, answer to
some questions, connected with your parallel career of a solo singer? - Yes, of course.
1. How long have you been taking solo-singing lessons?
I have been interested in music since I was a little
girl, as I have always loved to sing. In the 1st year of primary
school I was already learning the guitar, and my brother Iztok helped me a lot
with that. I was on the school choir in primary school; back then we even
recorded a cassette where I had my first solo. In 8th grade I
decided to push my singing to the next step. I went to the audition for the
Music school in Kranj, and was accepted as the youngest solo singer. I was very
surprised, because I thought Iwould have to wait a couple of years until my
voice became more mature.
2. Where do you go to learn singing? What do you
especially like in your teacher?
My teacher is Francka Šenk and is specialised for solo singing. She
studied singing in Salzburg. I respect her and I really love to attend her
classes, because they are very interesting. Mostly we learn how to sing the
right tone and how to breathe in the right way.
3. Who have you
inherited the talent for singing from?
My grand-grand father played in a popular band. The love for music was
passed down to my older brother and me. My brother has a band and they have
already released a CD. They have also performed at some music festivals. My
second brother also tried for a while to succeed in music, but then he switched
to sports. And mother used to sing on a choir.
4. What are some of
your successes so far?
I have a cassette from the times of my choir singing, then in 5th
grade I took part in Prvi glasek Gorenjske, where I was 2nd. I was
very surprised by this, because I was the youngest in my cathegory. That was
also my first public appearance. I also took part in singing competitions at
our firebrigade meetings, where I won. I’m proud of all my
achievements. Besides all that I even sing at some charity concerts in front of
big audiences.
5. Who from the
world of solo singers do you admire the most?
I have a lot of idols and most of them are well-known all over the
world. These are singers like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, etc.
I also like some Slovenian singers and groups whose songs I like to sing.
6. Which music
styles do you like singing the most? And you are the best at?
I like all kinds of music. I especially like good quality music. I have
a lot of rock, pop and classical music CD’s. What kind of
music I listen to depends on the mood I’m in. All in all,
music relaxes me and I love listening to it.
7. What do you think of the latest Slovenian
Eurovision wining song by Alenka Gotar, which is a combination of rock and
classical opera music?
It’s good that we select
something original every year. I think Alenka will represent Slovenia in the
best way possible. I watch Eurovision song contest every year and it always
surprises me. Like for example last year when Lords from Finland won. I think
their shocking looks and music style contributed to their victory. To win the
Eurosong contest you have to be special and have a good overall performance.
But still there is politics that influences almost everybody and, last but not
least, Slovenia is too small to get a good placement. So unfortunately, a good
song and a good voice is obviously not enough.
8. What role will music play in your future life -
according to your plans and wishes?
I am interested in a lot of other things besides music. Even if I don’t become a professional musician, music will always be
a part of my life. Someday I want to have my own CD and a lot of performances.
I like going to concerts and it would be an honour to sing with a known singer
or a band.
Thank you for the interview. A lot of success in your
future singing career! -Thanks.
